1Now on the first [day] of the week,1262 Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2At this, she ran [back] and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and she told them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him!”
3Then Peter and the other disciple went out toward the tomb. 4Both ran together: the other disciple outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first. 5Bending over and looking inside, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not enter in.1263 6Then Simon Peter arrived, following him, and he entered into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying, 7and the cloth that had been [placed] on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Finally, the other disciple (who had arrived first at the tomb) also entered in, and he saw and believed. 9(For as yet, they still did not understand the Scripture: that Jesus had to rise again from the dead). 10After this, the disciples returned to their own homes.
11However, Mary remained standing outside the tomb, weeping. As she was crying, she stooped to look inside the tomb, 12and saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, and one at the feet. 13They asked her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She answered, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14Now after saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know1264 that it was Jesus.
15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?”
Supposing him to be the gardener, she answered, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”
16Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned around and said to him,1265 “Rabbouni!”1266 (which is to say, “Teacher!”)1267
17Jesus said to her, “Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brethren1268 and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”1269
18Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had said these things to her.
Appearance to the disciples—Thomas
19In the evening on that [same] day (the first day of the week), and as the doors [of the place] where the disciples were assembled were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. At this, the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Then again, Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, “Receive the1270 Holy Spirit! 23If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained.”
24However, Thomas, called the Twin,1271 one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But Thomas replied, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails and put my hand into his side, I will not believe!”
26After eight days, his disciples were inside once again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them, and he said, “Peace be with you.” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands! Place your hand here and put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing!”
28And Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”
29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me,1272 you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have believed.”
The Author’s Purpose
30Now Jesus accomplished many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31However, these ones are written, so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you may have life in his Name.
Appearance at the Lake
- Greek mia/| tw/n sabba,twn
- Perhaps because he was a Jewish priest
- Or “recognize/perceive”
- CT adds “in Aramaic” (or “in Hebrew”)
- Rabboni is a transliteration of the Hebrew word for “great teacher.”
- Or “Master”
- Here, avdelfou,j is clearly a reference to the spiritual brothers or disciples.
- Notice that Jesus did not say “our Father and our God”
- The Greek actually uses the indefinite, which means that the most literal and accurate translation would be “receive a h/Holy s/Spirit”
- Sometimes simply transliterated as “Didymus”
- TR adds “ Thomas”
